Gravity Data Interpretation Overview
For any given subject area the acquired gravity data are compiled and a Bouguer correction applied. The data are plotted on profiles and a full colour shaded relief map is produced.
An appropriate broad filter is selected, to approximate the regional gravity for the area. This is then subtracted from the Bouguer gravity to give Residual or Derivative Gravity Maps. These resulting maps will accentuate the anomalies that are caused by the geologic structure in the vicinity.
The Residual Gravity Map can be used with the density of the sediments to compute the causative structure. The structure can be portrayed on profiles and a map.
Whilst interpreting
the gravity profiles and maps; the interpreter will also frequently
refer to bathymetry or elevation data, magnetic
data, and
any available geological information.
The precise interpretation of the gravity data allows for accurate determination of where sediments have been uplifted, and / or intruded; and what material comprises the structures.
